The National Youth Service Corps and the Nigeria Police Force have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration aimed at enhancing the safety of corps members across the country.
This renewed pledge was made during a courtesy visit by the NYSC Director-General, Olakunle Nafiu, to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, Nafiu congratulated Disu on his recent appointment and commended the establishment of a special police tactical team, describing it as a proactive step toward strengthening national security.
He noted that the Police Force has remained a critical partner in the successful execution of NYSC programmes since the scheme’s inception. The Director-General, however, called for intensified security measures to safeguard corps members and NYSC officials both within orientation camps and at their places of primary assignment.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, Nafiu also appealed for enhanced protection of corps members, their personal belongings, and NYSC facilities, including corps lodges nationwide.
Addressing administrative matters, he highlighted provisions of the NYSC Act which exempt members of the Armed Forces and paramilitary agencies from national service. He therefore proposed closer engagement with the management of the Nigeria Police Academy to facilitate the issuance of exemption certificates to its graduates in line with statutory requirements.
In his response, Disu assured the NYSC of the Police Force’s continued support, emphasizing that security arrangements for corps lodges are already in place, with their locations documented for prompt response when necessary.
The Inspector-General described the proposal regarding exemption certificates for graduates of the Nigeria Police Academy as a positive development and pledged sustained cooperation between the Police and the NYSC.
