FG Moves to Fix FUD Infrastructure Gaps

By Emmanuella Oghenetega

The Federal Government has pledged renewed efforts to address infrastructure challenges in tertiary institutions, with a focus on improving learning conditions and supporting expansion plans.

Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, gave the assurance when he received a delegation from the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, led by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Mohammad Gumel, in Abuja.

The Vice-Chancellor said the visit was to draw attention to critical infrastructure gaps affecting the university’s growth and academic development.

He said the institution has continued to expand since its establishment but is now constrained by shortages in key facilities.

Gumel disclosed plans by the university to establish Faculties of Engineering and Environmental Sciences, noting that the projects depend on improved infrastructure support.

He listed major challenges facing the institution to include overcrowding, inadequate student accommodation, unstable electricity supply, and weak internal road and water systems.

According to him, the university, with over 20,000 students, has fewer than 3,000 bed spaces, forcing many students to live off-campus.

He said this situation raises welfare and security concerns for students.

He also called for urgent investment in stable power supply, including solar energy solutions, to address persistent electricity shortages on campus.

In his response, Goronyo commended the university’s leadership and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure in the education sector.

He conveyed the goodwill of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, and said the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains focused on improving infrastructure across key sectors.

The Minister said although the 2026 budget cycle has been concluded, efforts would be made to explore intervention windows, particularly in road infrastructure to improve access to the institution.

He advised the university to engage relevant ministries and agencies for support, including the Rural Electrification Agency for solar power solutions and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation for improved water supply.

Goronyo also referenced ongoing federal initiatives such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, aimed at expanding access to higher education.

He urged the university to adopt a multi-sectoral approach to addressing its infrastructure challenges and strengthen collaboration with government agencies.
