THE Delta State Commissioner for Primary Education, Rose Ezewu, has warned Chief Inspectors of Education (CIEs) across the state to desist from imposing unauthorised enrolment charges on parents, stressing that such actions contradict government policy and place unnecessary financial burdens on families.
The commissioner issued the warning yesterday during a meeting with CIEs in Asaba, following reports that some officials were operating outside approved enrolment guidelines.
Mrs. Ezewu said her office received credible information that certain inspectors were allegedly demanding ₦10,000 from parents, particularly those with pupils under the age of 10, while falsely claiming the directive originated from her office. She categorically denied issuing any such instruction.
According to her, any collection of money in her name, whether in public or private schools, is illegal and unjustifiable. She reminded the inspectors that their duty is to implement existing policies, not to introduce new charges without approval.
She further emphasised that at no time did her office, either verbally or in writing, authorise additional enrolment fees, and directed anyone involved in the practice to discontinue immediately.
The commissioner also cautioned inspectors against pressuring parents with claims of looming enrolment deadlines, clarifying that her office has not announced any closure of enrolment. She urged education officials to focus on service delivery rather than creating fear or confusion among parents.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, OkhakuIniovosa, disclosed that deliberations from the meeting would be documented in a formal report. She assured that any officer found culpable would be sanctioned in line with civil service rules.
The meeting, which was attended by senior education officials and members of the media, underscored the ministry’s commitment to enforcing discipline within the education system and reassuring parents that the enrolment process in Delta State remains fair, transparent and free of unauthorised charges.
