DTSG Flags-Off Distribution Of Relief Materials To 2024 Flood-Impacted LGs

By Ifeanyi Uwagwu

THE Delta State Government has officially commenced the distribution of relief materials to local government areas affected by the 2024 floods, reaffirming its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities across the state.

The flag-off ceremony, which took place at the state  Warehouse Asaba, was led by the Commissioner for the Bureau for Special Duties, Hon Ejiro Etacherure.

He described the initiative as a continuation of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s people-centred leadership and dedication to fulfilling promises made to Deltans.

“In all honesty, I must commend the state government, especially His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, a man who has always stood by his word. Today’s event is a clear demonstration of renewed hope. This is just the beginning—he is prepared to do more,” Etacherure said during the event.

He applauded the efforts of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), describing the agency as the leading force behind the successful coordination of the state’s disaster response.

“Everything we have received, we have distributed accordingly. I urge our local government representatives to ensure these materials reach those most in need, especially the victims of the flood,” he added.

The commissioner also emphasised the importance of fair distribution, noting that repeated allocation to the same recipients must be avoided. “This relief is not meant for the wealthy, but for those truly impacted. I encourage LGAs to take these materials directly to the affected wards. Many still have not benefitted, and we want this effort to touch as many lives as possible,” he stressed.

He also acknowledged the steadfast support of the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau, Prince Gregory Ejohwomu, describing him as “a reliable and exemplary bureaucrat who has consistently ensured the success of the Bureau’s efforts.”

This latest distribution marks the seventh time the Delta State Government has provided relief since the onset of the 2024 flooding disaster, reflecting the administration’s resolve to stand with affected citizens until full recovery is achieved.

The local government areas that benefited from this round of distribution include Oshimili South, Aniocha South, and Burutu. Relief items distributed consisted of essential food items such as bags of rice, salt, beans, and cartons of tomato paste, alongside jerry-cans of cooking oil, detergents, and other toiletries.

Hon. Etacherure concluded by reiterating the Governor’s commitment to the welfare of every Deltan, assuring citizens that the Oborevwori administration will continue to act decisively in the face of emergencies.

“The Governor is a promise-keeper, and his heart is with every Deltan. He came prepared, and I can assure you he won’t disappoint,” he affirmed.

Speaking on behalf of the local government representatives, the Secretary, Aniocha South Local Government, Prince Tony Ebube, lauded the state government for the gesture, just as he promised that the relief materials would get to the intended beneficiaries.
