…Assembly Resumes Plenary After Annual Recess

BY ANDREW IKEHI

mEANWHILE,   the State House of Assembly, yesterday, resumed plenary after a six week recess.

The six weeks annual recess, which commenced July 22 this year, ended midnight of September 1, as the House was billed to have resumed September 2, but further adjourned plenary by one week.

At the resumed plenary yesterday, the lawmakers, apparently fresh from the barely seven weeks break, expressed renewed vigour for enhanced legislation. Welcoming the lawmakers back to plenary, the Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor reminded them of their core legislative assignment of enacting laws that would foster economic growth, social justice, and sustainable development

The speaker stressed the need for the legislators to strengthen their  oversight engagement as well as ensure transparency, accountability, and value for public resources.

He reaffirmed the need for sustainable collaboration with the Executive and other stakeholders while safeguarding the independence of the House.

He said, “As we reconvene, our commitment remains clear: We must also respond decisively to the pressing needs of our people, that is, infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and security.

“The lessons from Manchester have reinforced that meaningful change begins with focused planning, inclusive consultation, and timely execution.

‘Distinguished colleagues, the hallmark of this 8th Assembly must be unity, diligence, and service above self. Personal interests must give way to the collective good of our State. Let us be guided by the knowledge that history will measure us not by the titles we hold, but by the impact we create”.
