Asaba Open Illegal Drug Trade: NAS, Residents Raise Alarm

  • Urges DTSG, NDLEA To Act Swiftly

The National Association of Seadogs, also known as Pyrates Confraternity, has raised the alarm over the peddling of illicit drugs in Asaba, Delta State, warning that the unchecked menace poses a serious security and public health threat.

In a statement issued by Capoon of the Vito Corsica Deck in Asaba, Michael Chukwuma Nwaidei, the organisation expressed dismay at the apparent inaction of the Delta State Government and relevant agencies, despite the growing visibility of drug abuse and trafficking, particularly among young people.

Nwaidei singled out a notorious junction along Okpanam Road as a drug hotspot where young men openly trade in narcotics during daylight hours.

He described the area as a lawless zone where illicit activities thrive unchecked, endangering lives and undermining societal values.

“Every day, these young boys run under the tunnel to collect drugs, selling them freely despite our consistent outcry and reports, the authorities have failed to act decisively.”

The Pyrates Confraternity warned that the continued tolerance of such activities risks a deeper spiral into crime, moral decay, and insecurity in the community.

“Drug addiction not only destroys individuals—it breeds other social vices that threaten the peace and stability of society,” the statement noted.

NAS called on the Delta State Government and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to intensify surveillance and enforcement efforts in identified hotspots.

“We appeal to the authorities to act urgently and rescue our youth from this creeping epidemic,” Nwaidei.

In the same vein, some residents have called for urgent action against the activities of these persons engaging in open trade and consumption of hard drugs along the Okpanam road and other flashpoints in the state.

According to a resident, Mr. Joseph Osaro, said the open sales of drugs is a very bad practice, having in mind the danger of drugs on youths and society in general.

He called on the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to rise up to his responsibility and check the activities of these criminals in our midst.

Also, Mrs. Mary Nwaije, who owns a shop close to one of the spots notorious for the illegal drug trade, said the situation is worrisome.

According to her “these people sell these drugs openly, and have increased prostitution and crime in the area. No day when these boys and girls will not engage in fight and stealing and it is damaging their lives and future”

Others who spoke to our correspondent yesterday, lamented the situation, saying that NDLEA and the police are doing nothing to check the ugly trend.

As you can see, police will come here, but after allegedly collecting bribe they will turned blind eyes and deaf ears on what is going on, so who and where do we run to.

The situation is bad, hence we are calling on the Delta State Government to take drastic actions against the perpetuators of this criminal act by arresting and prosecuting these illegal drugs dealers before the situation will be out of hands.
