The Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, has charged the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Southern Delta University (SDU), Ozoro, Prof. Sunny Awhefeada, to drive academic excellence and innovation in the institution.
Tonukari gave the charge today in Asaba during the official presentation of the letter of appointment to Prof Awhefeada, urging him to hit the ground running and reposition the university in line with its mandate.
Addressing the new Vice-Chancellor in his office, the Commissioner emphasised the need to leverage the university’s science and technology focus to lead in applied research that directly addresses Delta State’s development priorities.
“You must leverage the university’s science and technology mandate to lead in applied research that speaks to the needs of Delta State,” Tonukari said. “We expect Southern Delta University to take the lead in areas such as sustainable energy, environmental management, agrotech, digital innovation, and skills development for employability.”
He further called for robust academic sustainability, stressing the importance of forging international linkages, strengthening research collaborations, and embedding entrepreneurship training into the university’s academic framework.
Prof Awhefeada, in his response, thanked the state government for the confidence reposed in him and described his appointment as a call to greater service.
“I am deeply grateful to the Delta State Government for this opportunity to serve,” he said, pledging to sustain and improve upon the achievements of his predecessor. “We will work collectively to build on the solid foundation already laid and move the university to greater heights.”
The appointment of Prof Awhefeada as Vice-Chancellor marks another chapter in the history of Southern Delta University. He succeeds Prof Jacob Oboreh.
A distinguished scholar and seasoned administrator, Awhefeada brings to the role a wealth of experience, a vibrant personality, and a proven track record of academic excellence.
Widely respected for his commitment to the advancement of knowledge and the promotion of quality education, Prof Awhefeada has built an impressive career at Delta State University, Abraka, where he has served in multiple academic and administrative capacities.
His previous roles include Head of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Director of Time Table and Special Duties, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University Orator, and currently Dean of the Postgraduate School.
As Vice-Chancellor of SDU, Prof Awhefeada is expected to consolidate on the university’s existing strengths while driving growth, enhancing academic programmes, and promoting research excellence. His leadership is also anticipated to foster a culture of innovation, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity within the institution.
