Independent Newspapers Awards: Proof Of My Administration’s Performance, Says Oborevwori

BY SUNDAY EGEDE

DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Saturday night bagged double awards of Outstanding Independent Governor and Best Independent Governor in Urban Renewal of the Year 2025.

The prestigious award, themed “Game Changers: Breaking Barriers, Shaping Tomorrow,” was presented at the Independent Newspapers Silver Jubilee Awards marking the organisation’s 25th anniversary. The event was held at Eko Hotels and Suites.

Governor Oborevwori, who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, described the awards as clear validation of his administration’s performance and the success of the state government’s development agenda.

Speaking with journalists after the ceremony, Onyeme said; “it is very evident to all Nigerians, especially Deltans, that our governor has significantly changed the narrative since assuming office in 2023.

“Today, he stands out as one of the best governors in the area of urban renewal. The impact is visible and undeniable.”

He highlighted the scale of transformation across Delta State’s urban centres, noting that the state, as one of the most urbanised in the country, has witnessed rapid infrastructural growth within a short period.

According to him, multiple flyover projects in key locations such as Ughelli, Warri, Effurun, and Enerhen Junction have improved traffic flow while enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of major cities.

Onyeme further disclosed that the administration had delivered approximately 300 kilometres of roads within the last year alone, describing it as a significant step towards bridging longstanding infrastructure deficits.

“When organisations carry out independent assessments and recognise this administration, it does not come as a surprise. The results speak for themselves,” he added.

He noted that the award would serve as both recognition and motivation for the government to intensify its efforts in delivering more dividends of democracy to the people.

“We have not rested, and we will not rest. We were elected to serve the people of Delta State, and we remain committed to that promise. The more responsibility we are given, the more we will deliver,” he said.

He attributed Governor Oborevwori’s drive to his passion for service and deep connection to the state, emphasizing that the governor is committed to leaving a lasting legacy.

“His desire is to ensure that before he leaves office after his second tenure, the difference will be clear and undeniable. He aims to set a standard that future administrations must strive to meet or surpass,” he said.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Managing Director and Editor-ln-Chief of Independent Newspapers, Steve Omanufeme, congratulated all award recipients, noting that the selection process involved public voting as well as rigorous scrutiny by a jury and the organisation’s board.

Omanufeme also announced that further activities to commemorate the newspaper’s silver jubilee would continue in October, this year with a special celebration involving stakeholders and invited guests.
