The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, in collaboration with Ideal Dental Foundation has paid a visit to the Karomajiji Community of Disabled Persons to offer medical services to the residing persons with disabilities.
The Karomajiji Community of Disabled Persons also known as “Diabled Colony” is a settlement in the Federal Capital Territory which serves as a home to physically challenged persons along their families.
Speaking at the event today, David Aire, the State Program Officer of the Leprosy Mission Nigeria, disclosed that the outreach is an event organised quarterly by the Leprosy Mission Nigeria.
He said, “we are currently at the Karomajiji community for people with disabilities basically on a medical outreach, which is something we do every quarter. And today we are here in collaboration with the ideal Dental Foundation.
According to David, the aim of the collaboration is to serve and offer services to persons with disabilities, and while the Ideal Dental Foundation offer Dental Services, and while they handled the dental side of the outreach, “we are handling the other medical parts of its.”
Also speaking, Dr. Wisdom Okereke Obumneme, Director of ideal Dental Foundation International, said, “we are members of the ideal dental foundation international, we are currently here for our community-based intervention or our health intervention.
The Director revealed that oral health is something most people fail to take seriously, “and the ideal dental Foundation, having seen that most people cannot afford the entire treatment decided to bring oral health to the door steps of people whom due to financial constraints and a lack of awareness are unable to access such care. And that’s why we came to the disabled Community, because they have a lot of challenges.” He said.
He disclosed that the health foundation started in 2017, “and even before now, as at last year, up until this year, we have visited secondary school and primary schools for health sensitization and awareness.
“Infact when we came here, we saw of lot of individuals with serious calculus load in their mouth that have lost their tooth and as a result, have social withdrawal.
“You know, when you have tooth problem, you will realize that you will not be able to function normally, and that is how it also relates to mental health and to the overall well-being.
“At the end of this exercise, we are going to take people with need for dental treatment to our state of the art Clinic based hospital.”
