The Atlas Lions of Morocco booked their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final after defeating a resilient Super Eagles of Nigeria 4-2 in a tense penalty shootout following a gripping 0-0 stalemate in the second semi-final.
In what many billed as the “final before the final,” both sides delivered a tactical masterclass at a raucous Mohammed V Stadium. Nigeria, under pressure to contain Morocco’s high-intensity pressing, remained compact and disciplined, with Calvin Bassey anchoring a solid defensive unit that restricted the hosts to just one shot in the first half.
The second period saw Morocco raise the tempo, dominating possession and territory, yet Nigeria’s backline held firm, frustrating the North Africans and forcing the game into extra time despite waves of attacking intent from both benches.
With neither side able to break the deadlock even after a flurry of substitutions, the contest headed to penalties, the ultimate test of nerve.
Both teams converted their opening kicks, but Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali produced a crucial save to deny Morocco’s second taker. However, Samuel Chukwueze’s casual effort was comfortably saved by Yassine Bounou, sparking wild celebrations in the stands.
Paul Onuachu stepped up to restore hope for the Eagles, but Bruno Onyemaechi’s subsequent miss proved costly as Youssef El-Nesyri calmly converted Morocco’s decisive kick, sealing a 4-2 shootout victory and sending the home crowd into ecstasy.
Morocco now advance to Sunday’s final against Senegal, chasing their first AFCON title in 50 years, while Nigeria will face Egypt in the third-place play-off on Saturday, their first appearance in the consolation match since 2019.
The Super Eagles exit with their heads held high after a valiant defensive display, but it is the Atlas Lions who march on toward continental glory.
