THE Delta State Government has hinted at moves to boost the availability of classroom furniture in primary schools across the state, with the ongoing production of more than 30,000 chairs and tables for pupils.
This was disclosed, today, by the immediate past Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, during the presentation of 200 tables and chairs to Ahabam Primary School in Asaba by USA Chapter of ASDEV ‘81 Club of Asaba.
Remarking at the event, Dr Ashibogwu thanked ASDEV ‘81 Club for the gesture, which he said was geared towards improving the learning environment and inspiring learners and tutors.
Ashibogwu added that funding education should not be seen as the sole responsibility of the government, stressing that other well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies should emulate the ASDEV ‘81 Club in giving back to society.
‘’As a state government, we are not relenting on the issue of furniture in our schools. The provision of over 30,000 chairs and tables is ongoing, and very soon we will begin to distribute them.
‘’We thank the Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for making it work. As a government, we are prepared to make our people see the dividends of democracy’’ the commissioner said, even as he charged the management of the school and the Asaba community to guard against vandalism.
Responding, the Asagba of Asaba, HRM Obi (Prof) Epiphany Azinge SAN, who commissioned the 200 seats and tables and 1000 notebooks, said the initiative of ASDEV ‘81 Club was in sync with the social infrastructure of his administration, just as he commended the club for the undertaking.
The monarch, while demanding more interventions from the government, assured that the Asaba community will continue to play a supportive role in attracting the dividends of democracy.
Meanwhile, the Project Committee Chairman of ASDEV ‘81 Club of Asaba, USA Chapter, Ogbueshi Emmanuel Obi, represented by Ogbueshi Ephraim Okotcha said the donations were part of their efforts to support the future of the children, stressing that the club remained committed to contributing to the growth and development of the Asaba Community.
‘’Instead of waiting for others to act, we decided to take the first step because when you lift a child, you lift a family, and when you lift families, you lift an entire community. Our children are our future, and investing in them is investing in Asaba’’ he said.
Others who delivered goodwill messages at the auspicious occasion include the Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government, Dr Kelvin Ezenyili, who was represented by the Leader of the Oshimili South Legislature, Michael Okonji; the headmistress of Ahabam Primary School, Mrs Elizabeth Echenua; and the Chairman of ASDEV 81 Club, USA Chapter, Ogbueshi Larry Okolo.
