THE Director of Statistics, Delta State Ministry of Economic Planning, Ms Nkechi Madumezia has highlighted the significance of compiling the State Gross Domestic Product (SGDP), as it enables the government to implement policies that promote economic growth, create employment opportunities and ultimately contribute to a healthier economy.
Madumezia stated this at the end of a three-day intensive training workshop on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) organized for statisticians and statistical officers in the state by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in collaboration with the World Bank and Department of Statistics, Ministry of Economic Planning, Asaba.
She emphasized that attending every training session was crucial, as it would equip them with necessary skills and expertise to tackle the challenges of their future roles and responsibilities. The workshop was aimed at strengthening the capacity of statisticians and fostering alignment with national statistical methodologies. The sessions offered a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration and practical outcomes that will enhance the quality of data production and usage
The session was led by two facilitators, Mrs. Margaret Akinwunmi and Mr. Bartholomew Ngwee from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) that provided indepth coverage of various topics, including State GDP, main principles, methods of SDG computation and allocation of Gross Value Added (GVA) by industries, offering valuable insights and expertise to participants.
The insightful presentation revealed sectors driving growth, creating jobs and fostering development, thereby providing a comprehensive understanding of the state’s economic landscape.
The training session also provided a comprehensive examination of the System of National Accounts (SNA) 2008 compilation manual, including indepth discussions on the principles and concepts of SGDP accounts, as well as the definition of economic territory, offering valuable insights and expertise to the audience.
The compilation of the State Gross Domestic Product (SGDP) was described as a vital exercise that provides a clear picture of the size and structure of Delta State’s economy. It captures the value of goods and services produced within the state, showing sectors driving growth, creating jobs and contributing to overall development.
