Waterways Security: Delta Police Command Gets Gunboats

  • As CP Abaniwonda Commends IGP, Oborevwori For Support

BY PATRICK MGBODO

security in Delta State has received a major boost following the donation of two gunboats to the state police command by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to enhance safety on the waterways.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with The Pointer, today, while commending the state government for its unwavering support towards maintaining peace and order across Delta.

He applauded IGP Egbetokun for the gesture, noting that the acquisition of the gunboats would significantly strengthen policing efforts along the state’s coastal and riverine areas.

“The state government under the leadership of Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori has been exceptional. Fortunately, my Inspector-General of Police has donated two gunboats to the Delta State Police Command, but we needed assistance to bring them into the state,” he said.

“That request was made yesterday (Tuesday), and the state government has already approved support to facilitate their transportation. I must say, many of our operations enjoy strong backing from the state government, although I won’t go into specifics.”

Emphasizing the centrality of security to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration, the Police Commissioner said, “Security is a core component of the MORE Agenda. As one of the governor’s key priorities, you can see the clear results on ground.”

He expressed profound gratitude to Governor Oborevwori, describing the support from the state as instrumental in the command’s continued efforts to safeguard lives and property.

“We want to thank him (Governor Oborevwori) tremendously for all the support and assistance we receive in our mission to secure Deltans and Nigerians,” Abaniwonda added. Reviewing the state’s security landscape, the CP noted that Delta has maintained a very secure status over the past 18 months.

“In the last one year and six months, Delta has remained one of the most secure states in the country. People are returning home, businesses are coming back,” he observed.

“Although some may contest this, anyone who witnessed the last Easter celebration can attest to this fact. Nightlife is back, businesses are springing up again. The atmosphere is changing.” CP Abaniwonda reaffirmed the command’s commitment to preserving peace and security in the state, assuring residents of sustained and proactive policing in collaboration with all stakeholders.
