Isoko South LG Chairman Moves to Boost Cassava Production

As part of efforts to enhance food production in Isoko South Local Government Area, the Chairman of the local government, Hon. Warri Ovoke Friday, has launched the “Warri Agro Care Scheme,” with focus on cassava plantation.

The Chairman, while inaugurating the seminar exercise, stated that economic expansion through infrastructure and agro-business is an integral component of the Warri for your worries campaign slogan, designed to complement the M.O.R.E agenda of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, aimed at ensuring abundant food production for all in the state.

He noted that, Isoko people are known for their farming prowess, particularly in cassava production.

According to him, it was not challenging for an Isoko child to identify cassava leaf, given the prevalence of farms in the area.

He disclosed that the programme is aimed at making Isoko South farmers to enhance food productivity for sustainable livelihood.

“During our campaign, we promised that agriculture would be part of our focus; we are keeping our word. Isoko is renowned for farming, and as a matter of fact, no true son or daughter of Isoko can fail to identify a cassava leaf,” the Council Chairman said.

He urged the people to identify farming as a key step for sustainability. “Take this training seriously. We’re ready to partner with ASCN network for the general good of Isoko South,” he added.

The Council Chairman, thereafter, declared the training open, adding that his administration had already keyed into pepper farming as a pilot scheme project to make food surplus for the people of the local government area.

It would be recalled that the Council chairman, had earlier received the Association of Cassava Seed Entrepreneurs Network team in his office, led by its President, Rev Mrs Eboka, who used the opportunity to express gratitude to the chairman for investing in Isoko South’s agricultural sector.

She noted that, with the initiative, Isoko South would not be lagging behind in food sufficiency, but rather would have comparative advantage in all areas of agricultural production, particularly in cassava farming.

In his appreciation, the Supervising Councillor for Agriculture in the local government, Hon. Abedi Goodluck, thanked ASCN for coming to Isoko South Local Government to train rural farmers on cassava production and other farming technics.

The climax of the programme was the training of the farmers and the distribution of cassava stems to the participants, followed by a keynote presentation by Professor Ovharhe Oghenero Joseph.
