Kano Launches New Tree Planting Campaign

Kano State has launched a large-scale tree planting campaign with the flag-off of 5.5 million tree seedlings at the historic Yanbawa Shelter Belt in Makoda Local Government Area.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who led the flag-off, announced that each of the state’s 44 local government areas would receive an allocation of seedlings for distribution to schools, communities, and public institutions.

The Yanbawa Shelter Belt, one of the oldest and most effective defences against desert encroachment in Kano, was chosen as the venue for its symbolic and practical significance.

The governor emphasised its role in preserving arable land and said the new campaign aims to replicate such green buffers across the state.

To support the effort, the state government has rehabilitated two major nurseries at Mai Nikka in Gwarzo and Kafinciri in Garko. These nurseries will serve as central hubs for seedling production, training, and community outreach on sustainable tree care.

In furtherance of the campaign, Governor Yusuf directed all local government chairmen to establish Tree Planting Committees under their respective Agriculture Departments.

“This coordinated effort will ensure proper planting, maintenance, and eventual survival of these seedlings,” he said.

The initiative forms part of the state’s broader strategy to promote environmental sustainability and tackle the ongoing threat of desertification.

Fintiri Endorses Candidate Ahead Of Ganye Bye-Election

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri,  has thrown his support behind the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Barrister Mohammed Buba Joda, ahead of the August 16th House of Representatives bye-election in Ganye Federal Constituency, Adamawa State.

Addressing a large crowd at a campaign rally in Ganye, Governor Fintiri urged voters to “choose competence over sentiment” in order to sustain ongoing development and secure effective representation in the National Assembly.

He cited key achievements of his administration, including road rehabilitation projects, expanded healthcare facilities, and improvements in the education sector, as evidence of the impact of strong, capable leadership. He described Joda as “a tested and trusted advocate” capable of defending the interests of Ganye at the federal level.

In his remarks, Barrister Joda thanked the governor for the endorsement and pledged to build on the administration’s development agenda.

He promised to prioritise rural electrification, water supply infrastructure, and youth empowerment initiatives if elected.

The PDP campaign train is now set to continue canvassing in neighbouring wards, while rival parties ramp up their own outreach ahead of the poll.

Security at the Ganye rally was tight, with officers of the State Police Command working in collaboration with local vigilante groups to ensure a peaceful and orderly event.

ADC Records 75,000 New Members

The Zamfara State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has announced a major surge in grassroots support, with over 75,000 new members registered across all 14 local government areas.

This was disclosed by the state party chairman, Alhaji Kabiru Garba, during the ADC’s “Handshake Day” rally held at Maryam Hall in Gusau. The event brought together party executives, traditional leaders, and hundreds of new recruits.

Garba attributed the rapid membership growth to what he described as the party’s “clear vision for good governance” and increasing public dissatisfaction with the current administration in the state.

“Day by day, citizens are joining our party because they believe in our roadmap for security, economic revival, and social welfare. We have already surpassed 75,000 registered members and are on course to reach 100,000 before the end of the year,” he said.

While celebrating the party’s expanding base, the ADC also used the occasion to spotlight the persistent security crisis in Zamfara, calling on Governor Dauda Lawal and the federal government to intensify efforts against banditry and other forms of insecurity.

“Our people are tired of living in fear. As ADC grows stronger, we will continue to demand real, lasting solutions to protect lives and livelihoods,” he noted.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Garba expressed confidence that the party’s growing popularity and people-centred agenda would lead to electoral success both at the state and national levels.

“With God’s grace and the backing of our now tens of thousands of supporters, we are determined to win in 2027 and usher in a new era of responsive leadership in Zamfara,” he declared.
