THE Director, NYSC Media Department, Chief Julian Mgbemena has called on corps members across the country to use social media responsibly and in alignment with the Scheme’s core values of national unity and integration.
He made the call during a one-day working visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, where he addressed the 2025 Batch A Stream II corps members gathered at the camp’s multipurpose hall.
“Every post, reel, or comment you make instantly becomes part of Nigeria’s public square. Use that square to build, not to bruise,” he said.
He acknowledged that while social media has the potential to spread tribalism and misinformation, it can also be a powerful platform for promoting patriotic service, positive change, and the NYSC’s unifying mission.
The director emphasised the founding principles of the NYSC, promoting inter-ethnic understanding and reconciliation after the civil war, and urged corps members to use their platforms to highlight Nigeria’s cultural diversity.
“A single thoughtful post showcasing the traditions of your host community can do more to promote unity than a thousand tweets of hate,” he added.
Speaking on youth empowerment, Chief Mgbemena urged corps members to take full advantage of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, describing it as “a conveyor belt for future Dangotes, Otedolas, and Alakijas.”
He noted that by mastering trades such as agro-processing, fashion design, and digital technology, corps members could become job creators and contribute meaningfully to their host communities through impactful, community-driven projects.
Mgbemena also issued a strong warning against risky behaviour, urging corps members to avoid unnecessary adventures, late-night travels, and other conduct that could endanger their safety. “No Instagram story is worth your life,” he cautioned.
Concluding his visit, the NYSC official offered prayers for divine guidance and a successful service year. “May the Almighty order your steps, guard your paths, and crown your efforts with success,” he said, drawing a standing ovation from the audience.
Earlier, the state Coordinator, Mr John Vandi T. Kwaghe, had welcomed the Director of Media to the NYSC Delta State Permanent Orientation Camp.
He gave a brief on the camp activities and assured the visiting Director of corps members’ readiness to contribute to nation-building in Delta State.
Highlights of the visit included the presentation of cash awards to outstanding camp committees and a vibrant cultural display by the orientation band and dance troupe, which received enthusiastic applause from corps members and officials alike.
Camp officials described the director’s visit as both a morale booster and a timely reminder of the importance of responsible digital engagement and entrepreneurial drive in the task of nation-building.
