DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has congratulated Team Nigeria, represented by exceptional students from Delta State, on emerging champions at the recently concluded World Schools Debate Championship held in Doha, Qatar.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori expressed immense pride in the students, describing their victory as a reflection of Delta’s rising status as a hub for academic and intellectual excellence.
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the good people of Delta State, I heartily congratulate our brilliant students who have made Nigeria and Delta proud by emerging world champions at the World Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar,” the governor said.
He also gave special recognition to Miss Ikhamateh Splendour, who was named Overall Best Debater of the Championship. He described her achievement as “unprecedented and a shining testament to the ‘Delta Can-Do Spirit’.”
The governor praised the students for their discipline, eloquence, and intelligence, noting that their success underscores the value of his administration’s continued investment in education under the MORE Agenda.
He urged young Nigerians to draw inspiration from the feat and remain committed to excellence in both academic and personal pursuits.
Similarly, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor hailed the students’ victory, stressing that it affirms the effectiveness of the ongoing educational reforms in the state.
Reacting to the news of Nigeria defeating the State of Chicago, USA, and host country Qatar in the finals of the World Schools Debate Championship, Guwor remarked that the achievement by students, all of whom are from Delta State schools, speaks volumes about the state’s dedication to quality education.
Congratulating the students, their parents, and indeed all Nigerians, Rt. Hon. Guwor, who also serves as Treasurer of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria, described the win as a landmark moment for Delta and Nigeria’s education sector.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Nkem Nwaeke, the Speaker lauded the young debaters for showcasing the heights Nigerian youths can attain through preparation, discipline, and vision.
He noted that the victory is not only a testament to the student’s intellectual and oratorical abilities but also a reflection of Delta’s high educational standards and commitment to excellence.
On behalf of the Delta State House of Assembly, Guwor congratulated President Bola Tinubu, Governor Oborevwori, and all Nigerians on the students’ world-class triumph.
He added that the Assembly looked forward to receiving the team as ambassadors of excellence and inspiration to millions of Nigerian families.
The Speaker further assured that the Assembly will continue to support policies and initiatives that promote youth development, education, and excellence in all spheres.
The Nigerian team, comprising students exclusively from Delta State, surpassed top contenders from the State of Chicago and Qatar to clinch the global title. In a gripping contest, they secured a 2–1 win in the first round and followed with a clean 3–0 sweep in the finals, winning the championship with an emphatic 5–1 aggregate score.
The victorious team included Wisdom Chukwuma (Government College, Ughelli), Otorvo Uyoyou (Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun), Abraham Honour (Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka), Ikhamateh Splendour (Government Model Secondary School, Asaba), and Alika Daniel (Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale).
Their victory has ignited celebrations across Delta and beyond, reaffirming the state’s firm commitment to nurturing talents capable of thriving on the global stage.
