THE Anioma Women Movement has issued a passionate appeal to President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to expedite action towards the creation of the Anioma State, emphasising its potential to address long-standing disparities and enhance political unity in the Nigerian region.
In a formal submission, the leader of the Anioma Women Movement, Engr. Chinedu Osemenam highlighted the urgent need for Anioma State to rectify historical imbalances in Nigeria’s geopolitical structure.
The movement argues that establishing Anioma State would bring the South East to parity with other regions, fostering fairness and stronger political representation.
The push for Anioma State follows a bill recently introduced by the Senator representing the Delta North Senatorial District, advocating for its creation as part of the South East.
The movement contends that Anioma State would unify the Igbo people, reduce political fragmentation, and amplify the region’s electoral influence.
“The creation of Anioma State will consolidate the political power of the Igbo, ensuring a more cohesive front and stronger voice in national politics,” Osemenam stated.
The movement also underscored the strategic benefits of Anioma State, including an expanded electoral base, improved governance through regional competition, and enhanced negotiating power with the federal government.
These developments, they argue, would attract infrastructure projects, investments, and address specific challenges faced by the Anioma people.
Citing the ongoing security challenges in the South East, including separatist movements and economic disruptions, the movement urged President Tinubu to invoke the Doctrine of Necessity to fast-track the state’s creation.
They also called for the release of detained separatist leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, arguing that these actions would address the region’s perceived marginalisation and foster national unity.
The creation of Anioma State requires a constitutional amendment, a process the movement believes has been advanced by the Senate Committee on Constitution Review.
“We are confident that with legislative support and Your Excellency’s endorsement, Anioma State will become a reality, strengthening Nigeria’s political landscape,” he added.
The Anioma Women Movement emphasised that establishing Anioma State would not only promote inclusivity but also cement President Tinubu’s legacy as a leader committed to equitable governance.
