Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has said that the recent arrests of some native doctors are part of efforts to fight crime, stressing that genuine traditional religion is not under attack.
Recall that the Anambra State authorities have recently arrested multiple native doctors, including Johnpaul Ezenagu (Mmuo Mmili Afuluanya) and De Young Chief Priest, for illegal ritual practices and links to criminal activities.
Speaking during a media chat in Awka, the Governor emphasised that the operation was part of a broader effort to curb rising criminality allegedly tied to ritual practices and illicit spiritual services.
Soludo stressed that his government recognised and respects traditional worship, drawing a clear distinction between genuine religious practice and activities that promote crime. According to him, the State remained committed to protecting freedom of religion.
“We understand traditional religion,” he said. “We also understand the difference between traditional religion and criminal idolatry. We support freedom of worship. Anybody can worship the way they want, provided their rights do not infringe on those of others.”
He explained that the government’s intervention became necessary when certain practices began to encourage or facilitate criminal acts. The Governor noted that some individuals operating as native doctors have been linked to preparing charms for kidnappers and armed robbers, as well as engaging in dangerous and unethical practices.
Soludo further warned against the resurgence of harmful rituals and criminal trends such as “Yahoo Plus,” “Ego Mbute,” and “Oke-Ite,” which he said have no connection to authentic traditional beliefs or values.
According to him, such activities were purely criminal and must be confronted decisively. He reiterated that genuine traditional religion, which focuses on morality and humanity, should not be conflated with acts of violence or exploitation.
The Governor added that the State government has already taken action by arresting and prosecuting some native doctors allegedly involved in these illegal activities, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining law and order in Anambra State.
