Police Nab Serial Generator Thief In Asaba

BY RITA OYIBOKA

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, identified as Bassey Udo, over alleged involvement in multiple generator thefts and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Udo was apprehended near a popular club in Asaba, the state capital, by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) during a routine patrol.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, a search of the suspect’s bag uncovered a pistol with a magazine and live rounds.

“We prefer to be proactive rather than reactive. This arrest reflects our strategy under the leadership of CP Olufemi Abaniwanda, which is focused on preventing crime before it occurs,” Edafe stated in a video released on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

During interrogation, Udo confessed to breaking into residential properties between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. to steal generators, a crime he admitted to starting about two months ago. He claimed to have burgled nine houses in recent weeks and stolen generators, which he sold for about N35000-N40000.

SP Edafe maintained that the police remained resolute in safeguarding Delta State. “We are not playing. This suspect never expected to be intercepted, but our proactive approach made it possible,” he said.

The Command has launched further investigations into Udo’s network, the buyer of the generators, and the origin of the weapon. Authorities assured that more details would be made public as the case develops.
