IWD: Dcn Oborevwori Advocates Inclusion Of Women In Politics, Decision-Making

THE wife of the Delta State Governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, yesterday, emphasized the importance of greater inclusion of women in politics and decision-making positions as part of efforts to strengthen development in society.

She made the call during the celebration of the International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 held at the Event Centre, Asaba, with the theme “Give to Gain.”

The colourful event attracted women from various walks of life across the state, including representatives of religious groups, market women associations and other organized women groups.

In her address, Dcns Oborevwori, who organized the event, stressed that empowering women and ensuring their active participation in governance would contribute significantly to sustainable development.

She urged women to support one another and take advantage of opportunities that promote leadership, economic growth, and social impact.

The First Lady also emphasized the need for women at all levels to get their voters card, admitting that voting serves as the fundamental basis for the exercise of political power.

Earlier in her welcome address, wife of the Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Dr Josephine Emu, commended the First Lady for creating a platform that celebrates women and encourages them to contribute meaningfully to society.

She described the theme of the event as a reminder that giving through service, compassion and support for one another ultimately leads to collective progress.

Also speaking, the Delta State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon Pat Ajudua, delivered a goodwill message in which she highlighted the role of women in nation building.

She encouraged women to continue supporting initiatives that promote gender equality and community development.

In her goodwill message, the member representing Oshimili South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Bridget Anyafulu, underscored the need for sustained investment in women empowerment.

She noted that empowering women economically and politically would enable them to contribute more effectively to the growth of their communities.

One of the highlights of the event was a colourful march past involving about 250 women drawn from the 25 local government areas of the state.

At the end of the exercise, Okpe Local Government Area emerged overall winner.

The celebration, which attracted very top female government functionaries also featured games and various activities aimed at recognizing the achievements and contributions of women in society.
