The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a male suspect in connection with the kidnap and murder of Mr George Onwurah in Ndiukwuenu, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued in Awka, noting that the incident occurred in May 2024.
Ikenga said that police operatives attached to the Awgbu Division, acting on community intelligence, apprehended 19-year-old Chimaobi Mbonu at about 10:20 a.m. on June 12.
According to the police, Mbonu is suspected to be a member of a kidnapping gang involved in the abduction and subsequent murder of Onwurah.
“Preliminary information reveals that Mbonu and other members of the gang kidnapped and tortured the victim to death after collecting a ransom,” Ikenga said.
He added that the same gang is also believed to be responsible for the vandalism of the community health centre, where they stole various electrical fittings and other valuables.
Ikenga assured that operational strategies have been put in place to apprehend the remaining members of the gang who are still at large.
