DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, yesterday, urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to intensify efforts in mobilising eligible voters, particularly those yet to be registered, to participate in the ongoing voters registration exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The Governor made the call at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, during an enlarged meeting of party leaders at the ward, local government, and state levels.

He emphasized that all citizens who attained the age of 18 since the last registration in 2022 should be encouraged to register in order to exercise their franchise in the 2027 general elections.

Oborevwori explained that the meeting was convened to further strengthen the bond of unity among party stakeholders, stressing that, with a united front, the APC was poised for victory at all levels.

He assured of his synergy with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the collective good of the state and the nation, even as he applauded the commitment of APC leaders at the ward, local government and state levels to the growth and development of the party.

ā€œWith unity in our party, no other political party can defeat the APC. We are performing well at the federal level, and we are equally doing well here in the state.

ā€œThe issue of voters’ registration is very important, and we must take it seriously. From the ward level, ensure that those who could not register before are captured this time,ā€ the Governor said.

In his remarks, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, reminded elected and appointed members of the party of their duty to return to their wards and local governments to mobilise registrants.

He noted that working as a team remained the surest way to advance the ā€œRenewed Hope for More Agenda.ā€

Earlier in his remarks, the State Chairman of the party, Elder Omeni Sobotie, who underscored the importance of unity, urged members of the party to continue to work together in order to enhance the electoral fortunes of the party in future elections in the state.

Also speaking, a stakeholder of the party, Chief Solomon Arenyeka, appealed to aggrieved members to bury their differences and work in unity for the growth of the APC and the overall development of the state.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr. Valentine Onojeghuo, said the gathering was primarily convened to consolidate party unity and raise awareness for the ongoing voters’ registration exercise.

He stressed that unity and loyalty were indispensable for the party’s success in the 2027 polls, saying ā€œour first and most important takeaway from this meeting is the unity of the party because without unity, there can be no loyalty.

ā€œThe second is ensuring that all eligible young people turning 18 are captured in the ongoing registration. Once this is done, the 2027 general elections will be a walkover for our party.ā€

Meanwhile, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, has affirmed his administration’s commitment to the successful take-off of the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Kwale.

Speaking, yesterday, at Government House, Asaba, when he received the Governing Council and Management of the institution led by its Chairman and Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Salisu Banye, Governor Oborevwori described the institution as a legacy project that would boost access to quality education and healthcare delivery in the state.

ā€œAs pioneers, you carry the heavy responsibility of putting this university on a solid footing. The task ahead demands sacrifice, hard work, commitment, dedication, resourcefulness, and selflessness. I am impressed with the progress you have made so far, and I encourage you to sustain the momentum,ā€ the governor added.

He assured that his administration would continue to provide necessary support, including infrastructure and logistics, to ensure the university’s smooth take-off.

According to him, his government had already approved the use of the General Hospital, Kwale, as a take-off point for the Teaching Hospital, while efforts were ongoing to extend electricity supply to the campus.

Oborevwori recalled the challenges of limited admission slots in the past, which led to the establishment of additional state-owned universities during his tenure as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.

ā€œToday, we are the only state in Nigeria with four state-owned universities, all of which are thriving and reducing pressure on admissions. With this new federal university, more opportunities will be created for our children,ā€ he said.

The governor also highlighted Delta’s reputation as an education hub, citing the recent global debate award won by public school students in Doha, Qatar, as evidence of the good result of the state’s investment in quality education. He promised to provide a 30-seater bus to the university.

Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Salisu Banye, had expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for his unwavering support, describing the establishment of the university as a landmark achievement for both the state and the country.

Banye said: ā€œYour interventions, including the provision of classrooms, laboratories, offices, and 200 hectares of land for the permanent site, reflect your passion for infrastructure, quality education, and healthcare.

ā€œThis university will not only produce generations of competent medical professionals but also strengthen healthcare delivery and contribute to socio-economic growthā€. He disclosed that the institution, established on March 6, 2023, was preparing for the National Universities Commission (NUC) resource verification, which would enable it to admit students into Medicine and Allied Health Sciences.

The Pro- Chancellor appealed for more government’s assistance to meet the critical accreditation requirements as well as support for infrastructure such as access roads, drainage, fencing, hostels, and power supply.

Banye commended Governor Oborevwori’s foresight and leadership, expressing confidence that with his continued support, the University would grow into a center of excellence and a national model for effective medical education.
