NUJ Condemns Gunmen Attack On Radio Station

THE Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa Council, has condemned the recent attack by gunmen on the private radio station Rhythm 94.7 FM in Yenagoa.

The NUJ Bayelsa Council Chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, and the Secretary of the Council, Comrade Stanley Imgbi, expressed their outrage in a statement to journalists yesterday in Bayelsa State.

They described the attack as an assault on the entire media community in Bayelsa and a violation of press freedom.

“The State Council was informed that gunmen, on two separate occasions, Saturday, May 17, at about 2:10 pm and Sunday, May 18, at 4:40 pm, attacked the station and carted away valuables.

“Some of the items taken include mobile phones, recorders, and operational equipment belonging to staff on duty,” Yemoleigha said, urging the security agencies, particularly the Commissioner of Police, to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice. He also called for a police patrol vehicle to be stationed near the media house, as is the case at several strategic locations in Yenagoa, due to the radio station’s isolated location.

The NUJ Bayelsa chairman, however, expressed gratitude that no lives were lost during the attacks.
