LG Chairman Refutes Alleged Instruction Of Vigilantes To Mount Road Blocks

BY HOPE AKAEZUE/SAPELE

THE Chairman of Sapele Local Government, Hon Bright Afure Abeke, has debunked the circulating information that he instructed local vigilante groups to mount roadblocks in order to enforce the curfew on Okada and Keke riders, describing it as false, misleading and not reflective of the directive issued by the local government council.

According to the Chairman, only the Nigeria Police Force is officially mandated to enforce the 8:00PM curfew on Okada riders and 10:00PM on Keke operators within the local government jurisdiction, impounding motorcycles and tricycles of those that violate the directive.

Hon Bright Afure Abeke noted that the curfew was introduced as a security measure to ensure that residents of Sapele enjoy a peaceful and crime-free festive season.

“The curfew is in place to protect lives and property, not to create an avenue for harassment or extortion,” the Chairman stated.

The Chairman expressed deep concern over reports of certain vigilante members mounting unauthorized roadblocks as early as 8:00 PM, allegedly harassing and extorting commercial riders under the guise of enforcing the curfew.

He strongly condemned such actions and issued a stern warning to all vigilante heads across the local government area:

“Vigilante groups have a defined role in community security. They are not authorized to enforce curfews or target commercial riders. Any vigilante member found engaging in such unlawful conduct will face appropriate disciplinary action.”

The Chairman further directed all vigilante heads to sensitize their members about their duties and responsibilities, saying that they are to support the Nigeria Police in maintaining peace and order, not to usurp their role or cause a breakdown of law and order.

He emphasized that Vigilantes must not mount roadblocks or checkpoints, must seize motorcycles or tricycles and must not harass or extort any member of the public. He emphasized that their duty remains community surveillance and intelligence gathering, in collaboration with recognized security agencies.

He further added that Sapele Local Government Council remains committed to ensuring that all residents enjoy a safe, secure, and peaceful environment, especially during the festive period, He called on all stakeholders, including commercial riders, community leaders, and security personnel, to work together in upholding law and order.

Hon Bright AfureAbeke therefore urged residents of Sapele to report any case of harassment, extortion, or illegal roadblocks to the nearest police station or the local government secretariat.
