DEPUTY Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence, Sen Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, has boosted the morale of the Nigerian armed forces with renewed assurances of legislative support in the fight against insurgency.
At his visit to the 63 Brigade headquarters in Asaba, Delta State Capital, Sen Joel-Onowakpo, who represents Delta South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, reiterated the commitment of President Bola Tinubu to ensuring the security of all Nigerians.
Sen Joel-Onowakpo, who was on a familiarisation visit to the military formation, thanked President Tinubu for providing support and funding to improve the security architecture, as well as appreciating the National Assembly for creating an enabling legislative environment for peace and security.
‘’I want to commend the government of President Tinubu, who has done exceptionally well in curtailing insurgency in the country within the last two years of this administration, even though there is still a lot more to be done’’ he said.
He commended the military, including fallen heroes, for their gallant efforts in discharging their constitutional duties, noting that the nation has made remarkable improvements in the fight against insurgency.
Addressing journalists, the senator said, ‘’The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, is solidly behind them (armed forces) in the fight against insurgency.
‘’The level of insurgency in the country has reduced drastically. Even though we are not where we ought to be yet, we have made significant progress. I also commend the officers and men of the Nigerian armed forces for doing wonderful work.
‘’I am also encouraging citizens to participate in security affairs. Like it is said in the United States, ‘If you see something, say something’ to help them (armed forces) do their job.
‘’I want to assure them that the National Assembly, ably led by the President of the Senate, Sen Godswill Akpabio, working together with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will give all the support to make a difference within this administration’’ Sen Joel-Onowakpo.
Earlier, the Commander of 63 Brigade, Brig-Gen Moronfolu Shonibare reaffirmed their support and utmost in dealing with insecurity, just as he thanked the senator for his visit.
