The Isunambogu Social Club of Ibusa Worldwide has donated 100 desks and chairs to Omu Model Primary School and the Omu Boys Secondary School in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Speaking during the donation yesterday, President-General of the Club, Engr. Patrick Okonji described the gesture as one of the organisation’s flagship project and part of its long-standing commitment to community development.
He recalled several initiatives undertaken by the club over the years, including the construction of classrooms, scholarships, donations to Ibusa General Hospital and support for peace keepers. “In Ibusa, anything that can bring development is dear to us. That has been our identity for decades,” Okonji said, urging the students to take their education seriously.
Representing the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, the Chief Inspector of Education, Mrs. Rosemary Anyah, commended the club for its intervention, stressing that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility. She noted that the donation would ease the burden of inadequate furniture in public schools.
“This initiative is most appreciated by His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who understands that government cannot do it alone. I also use this medium to call on individuals, clubs and corporate bodies to emulate this gesture by supporting our schools, especially in areas of security and infrastructure,” she said.
The PG of Ibusa Community Development Union (ICDU), Chief Victor Uchunor, lauded the effort but warned against vandalism of such facilities. “When individuals take up projects to support the government, and those efforts are wasted, it discourages others from doing more. Schools must set up bodies involving parents to safeguard infrastructure,” he advised.
In his remarks, secretary of the club, Mr. Hypolite Iwunor, gave a brief history of the organisation, founded in 1978 and now boasting over 100 members across branches in Ibusa, Lagos, Benin, London and beyond. He reiterated the club’s resolve to keep intervening in education, health and other sectors of community development.
The Principal of Omu Boys Secondary School, Mrs. Augustina Omeife, expressed gratitude on behalf of staff and students, likening her joy to “the fulfilment of a long search.” She prayed for the continuous prosperity of the club and its members.
Similarly, the Assistant Senior Prefect, Solomon Wisdom thanked the club for its generosity and pledged to put the furniture to good use.
