RENOWNED public affairs analyst and traditional medical practitioner, Chief (Dr) Yomi Hassan, has officially declared his interest in becoming the next Chairman of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
In a bold and passionate statement made in Agbor, Dr Hassan vowed to transform Ika South within one month of assuming office, promising swift reforms, open-door governance, and people-centred policies.
Addressing a gathering of supporters and journalists, Dr Hassan announced his intention to serve only two years in office, not for political gain, but to make an immediate and measurable impact.
“I want to be the Chairman of Ika South for only two years, not four. And I don’t care what political party I fly under. I am ready to work with any party that believes in my vision and is willing to give me a free hand to deliver real results,” he said.
Dr Hassan’s campaign promises are unlike any in recent memory, marked by urgency, humility, and personal sacrifice. He unveiled an ambitious transformation blueprint, declaring:
“I won’t stay in the Government Lodge. I’ll run the local government from my home. I want to remain close to the people. I’ll use my car. I don’t need an official vehicle. My salary will be ₦500,000 monthly, no more, no less. I don’t want any allowance.
“All pension arrears in Ika South will be cleared within three weeks of my assumption of office. I will fix all roads within the local government, whether state or federal, within two weeks. I will eliminate insecurity in the local government within a month.”
Dr Hassan also stressed his commitment to transparency and collaboration, pledging to create open channels of consultation and dialogue that cut across political and community lines.
“I’ll initiate an open consultation process involving former governors, past chairmen, community leaders, youth groups, and all stakeholders. Ika South belongs to all of us. We must build it together,” he added.
Responding to questions about his eligibility, Dr Hassan affirmed his right to contest in Ika South:
“I’m a Nigerian. An Igbo man has been a Local Government Chairman in Lagos. Another did it in Kano. I have lived in Agbor for 52 years, and I know every nook and cranny. Ika South is my home.”
He made it clear that while he is open to working with any other political party, it would only be on his terms, rejecting backdoor politics or questionable power deals.
“I don’t want any ‘kill-and-divide’ political agreement. I’ll fund my campaign. I don’t need donations. All I want is the freedom to carry out my vision. Ika South needs someone who can solve problems, and I am that someone,” he declared.
In closing, Dr Hassan issued a call to action: “I’m not here for political showmanship. I’m here because Ika South needs a leader who can deliver. I’m offering myself. The people should decide.”
