AN early morning fire, yesterday, destroyed goods and property worth several millions of naira at the Igbudu Market in Warri, Delta State.
The affected stores, numbering about five lines include artificial hair, cosmetics , hair dressing salon equipment among other fashion materials sold in the market.
The cause of the inferno was not immediately known as at press time, however it was alleged that the incident occured when electricity supply was restored to the Concord Line of the market at about 1:00 am .
A resident of the area, Mr Opia Edafiadjebre narrated that it took the combined efforts of residents of the area and men of Delta State Fire Service to put out the fire
He also disclosed that the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Isaac Agbateyiniro and his Vice, Kingsley Edafiadjebre, were involved in the battle of putting the fire under control.
The affected area and a good section of the market were closed for business as victims and their relations discussed the matter when our correspondent visited the area.
Meanwhile the Chairman of Warri South Local Government, Agbateyiniro has setup a high powered committee on the fire incident headed by the Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Emmanuel Nunu.
Nunu, who address the victims on behalf of the Warri South Local Government chairman expressed deep sympathy with them.
The President-General of Igbudu Market Traders Association, Brume Kugbere, who spoke to our correspondent, lamented that the effect of the fire disaster is unbearable to victims, particularly in these austere times.
A victim, Mrs Joy Ugbejevun made a passionate appeal to the government and public-spirited Nigerians for assistance as she lamented that what she lost in the in fire incident was colossal.
