As part of efforts to ease traffic congestion in Delta State, the Director-General of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA), Dr Benjamin Okiemute, has met with representatives of commercial banks in Asaba to address the problem of indiscriminate parking and traffic obstruction around bank premises.
The meeting, held in Asaba, formed part of DESTMA’s ongoing engagement with corporate organisations and critical stakeholders in the state.
In his remarks, Dr Okiemute thanked the banks for honouring his invitation and emphasised the agency’s determination to enforce traffic and obstruction laws across the state. He urged the banks to sensitise their customers on the consequences of illegal parking, warning that DESTMA would clamp down on defaulters going forward.
The DG also appealed to the banks to support the agency through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, particularly in the provision of operational vehicles and uniforms, which he said would boost DESTMA’s efficiency in traffic management.
Responding on behalf of the banks, a representative thanked the DESTMA boss for the engagement and requested clear guidelines on acceptable parking standards, to enable banks to adopt them at their premises.
He also appealed to the agency to step up its enlightenment campaigns on the dangers of illegal parking and obstruction.
On the CSR request, the representative assured that DESTMA’s appeal would be duly considered, adding that the agency should formally communicate its needs in writing to the banks.
He promised to convey the resolutions of the meeting to bank management for necessary action.
Dr Okiemute further noted that public sensitisation on traffic laws was ongoing across Delta and reiterated the agency’s commitment to restoring order in the transport sector and ensuring smooth vehicular movement in urban centres.
