DELSU SUG Unveils Renovated Secretariat, Honours Outstanding Students and Leaders

The Delta State University (DELSU) community celebrated a landmark double event on Saturday, 6 December 2025, as the Student Union Government (SUG) officially commissioned its newly refurbished secretariat and presented certificates and awards to deserving students, and past leaders.

The colourful ceremony, held at the Site III Abraka Campus, began with the commissioning of the ultra-modern SUG Secretariat, now renamed the “Prof. Samuel O. Asagba SUG Secretariat” in honour of the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, who personally performed the unveiling.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Asagba expressed delight at the transformation of the facility and pledged even greater support for student leadership.

In his words “I am really impressed with what I have seen today, before the end of my tenure, I will ensure the SUG gets a befitting complex, a storey building that will comfortably house offices for all arms of the union and provide space for visiting guests.”

The Vice-Chancellor, who recently awarded scholarships to two indigent students from the Abraka and Oleh campuses, reiterated his open-door policy and commitment to student welfare.

In his remarks, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Ignatius Njoseh, praised the outgoing SUG President, Amb. Dr. Onovughegor, for his resilience and exemplary leadership. He urged the newly elected 32nd administration to build on the solid foundation laid.

A major highlight was the official launch of the DELSU SUG website (delsusug.com), the first of its kind among student unions in Nigerian universities. The President described the platform as a one-stop digital hub where students can access information, download materials, stay updated on union activities, and connect with leadership.

The awards segment of the programme recognised outstanding contributions across various categories, with Oseh Joshua named Most Behaved Student, Oruade Royce Orevaoghene honoured as Best Faculty President for the Faculty of Science (2024/2025 session), and Omenogor Uwaoma Victory receiving the award for Best Departmental President in Animal Science (2024/2025). Ethiope Hall was celebrated for Best Hostel Governance, while H.R.M. (Sen.) Marvellous Ovie Ekama, the Ukeruo-Orodje of Okpe Students, was recognised as Best Cultural Head, and Patrick Godspower emerged as the Most Active Outgoing Coordinator from the Department of Accounting.

Special recognition was also accorded to Mr Michael Tager, Chief Security Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor, Chief Security Officer Mr Odita Ifeanyi Joseph, and ACP Victor Bassey of the Sapele Area Command (represented by CSP Kolo Musa Dauda, the new DPO of Abraka Division) for their immense support to the student community.

Speaking at the event, the DPO admonished the students to refrain from the use of hard drugs and assured strengthened support and a cordial relationship between the students and security personnel. I’m his words “Students are my friends but I do not support the use of drugs, I’m strongly against it and I advise you to desist from it.”

Past SUG leaders from the 27th to the 31st administrations were equally honoured with certificates of service, acknowledging their contributions to student governance and welfare.

The well-attended event drew the SUG executive, legislative, and judicial arms, newly elected senators and honourables, faculty and departmental presidents, hall governors, cultural groups, the Supremost Kegite Club, security officials, and a large turnout of students.

The dual celebration has been widely hailed as a testament to the growing maturity of student leadership at Delta State University and the strengthened partnership between the university administration and the student body.
