Cultists Hack Niger Delta Varsity Graduates To Death

Some suspected cultists have hacked two graduates of the Bayelsa State owned Niger Delta University, Amassoma, to death.

It was gathered that the graduates, Ayaokpo Sinclair, who hailed from Tombia Community and his yet-to-be-identified friend were killed at Gbarantoru community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.

The deceased were said to be waiting for their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) before they were killed. Commander of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) in Bayelsa State, Tolummbofa Jonathan, disclosed over the weekend that the two graduates had strolled out to buy something when the cultists attacked them.

Jonathan said after chanting “Aiye, Aiye”, a slogan believed to be their cult slogan, the cultists, who came with a vehicle, began to unleash machete cuts on the graduates.

According to him, one of the deceased escaped with machete cuts and jumped into a nearby creek, where he eventually died, but the other was killed instantly.

“One jumped into the creek and managed to swim out, but the driver of the vehicle that brought the cultists later accosted him.

“He identified him as his relation and tried to save him, but when the attackers came back to the car and saw the graduate, they overpowered the driver and macheted the graduate until he became unconscious.

“I tried with my men to revive him by taking him to the community health centre for first aid. But he gave up the ghost at the clinic. So, the police were invited and the bodies were deposited at the morgue,” he said.

Jonathan said the police had commenced an investigation into the matter, and arrested the driver of the vehicle that brought the hoodlums to the community, while they are trailing the other fleeing culprits. When contacted, the spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident, saying some suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing.

“The State Criminal Investigative Department has commenced an investigation into the matter to arrest the fleeing suspects,” he said.
