Blackout: Protest In Agbarha-Otor Averted

BY JOEL GRANDBALL/UGHELLI

IMMINENT protest by Agbarha-Otor community over years of continued blackout has been averted following the intervention of stakeholders in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The averted protest was as a result of nearly a decade blackout and non-reconnection of the community to the national grid by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), despite the huge contribution to the nation economy.

This was just as youths from the community sent a ‘Save our Soul’ to the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to rescue them from the over a decade blackout in Agbarha-Otor.

The youth body, in a letter signed by the Agbarha-Otor youth leaders, Coach Rufus Ovotu and Engr. Emmanuel Emareyo Dickson appealed to Governor Oborevwori to rescue the people of Agbarha from the blackout after the provision of a step down transformer by the governor.

“We write to express the profound gratitude of the good people of Agbarha-Otor kingdom for the step down transformer recently provided to our community under your leadership.

“Thi s ges ture has brought immense relief to our people and demonstrates your unwavering commitment to the welfare of Delta State citizens.

“We are particularly grateful for your responsiveness to our needs and your dedication to improving the lives of your people.

“The provision of this step down transformer is a testament to your administration’s focus on infrastructure development and citizen’s welfare.

“Your Excellency, we humbly appeal to you to continue your support in ensuring the restoration of electricity in Agbarha Otor.

“The provision of the step down transformer is a significant step, but we still require additional support to fully restore electricity to our community.

“We are confident that with your continued support, we can overcome the challenges that have hindered our development and improved the living standards of our people.”

“We look forward to your continued leadership and support as you continue to serve the people of Delta State.”

It was learnt that despite the provision of step down transformer by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) is yet to restore and connect the community back to national grid over an alleged accumulated debt owed by Agbarha-Otor communities.

Agbarha-Otor is one of the oil producing communities in Ughelli North local government area, and Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) plant with the largest Manifold in West Africa.
