Asagba’s Withdrawal From Anioma State C’ttee Demonstrates Principled Leadership —Nkeaka

BY VICTORY OKONJO

SENIOR Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Political Matters, Hon. Leo Nkeaka, has commended His Royal Majesty, Asagba Prof. Epiphany Azinge, the Asagba of Asaba, for withdrawing as Chairman of the Technical Committee for Anioma State creation, citing it as principled leadership to safeguard Asaba’s historical identity and aspirations.

Hon. Nkeaka explained that the decision stemmed from irreconcilable differences over the proposed state’s geographical boundaries and capital relocation from Asaba.

“These are not trivial matters. The geographical configuration of a state determines its economic viability, administrative efficiency, and cultural cohesion.

“Similarly, the location of a state capital carries profound implications for development, identity, and the distribution of socio-economic opportunities,” he stated.

The aide contextualized the withdrawal following Senator Ned Nwoko’s courtesy visit to the Asagba’s Palace, where the senator briefed on the Anioma State Bill, which passed first and second readings in the Senate.

During the visit, His Royal Majesty advised Senator Nwoko to consult the Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and other stakeholders for synergy.

He emphasized inclusivity, noting that Asaba’s participation hinges on involving communities across the Niger River within the South-South region.

“Nna Agu, as the Asagba is traditionally greeted, made it clear that the initiative should focus on the South-South region and include more prominent Anioma sons in the committee,” Hon. Nkeaka recounted.

Hon. Nkeaka stressed that the Asagba’s oath as custodian of Asaba’s traditions compelled the step-down when committee alignment threatened local interests.

He clarified this as conditional support for Anioma State, not opposition, urging a historically grounded approach.

The aide highlighted Asaba’s centrality as Delta State’s capital, housing key infrastructure, asserting that any capital shift will demand transparent consultations with the traditional institutions.

Hon. Nkeaka welcomed the appointment of the Obuzor of Igbuzor, Prof. Louis Chelunor Nwaoboshi, as new Chairman, praising his experience.

“We commend Senator Ned Nwoko for appreciating the Asagba’s contributions and ensuring continuity,” he said.

In his further remarks, Hon. Nkeaka reiterated the need for federal-state collaboration in state creation, viewing the withdrawal as an opportunity for inclusive consultations benefiting all Anioma communities.
