The Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, has thrown his weight behind the N10 million Real-Time Skills Empowerment Scheme of the Southern Nigeria Youth Congress (SNYC), Delta State Chapter.
He made this known during a courtesy visit from the Executives of the Congress to his office, where he commended the scheme as a practical step towards reducing unemployment among young people.
The scheme, unveiled recently at the State Secretariat, Asaba, is targeted at training 500 youths across Delta State.
According to the organisers, the empowerment programme is being run in collaboration with the Delta State Technical and Vocational Education Board. It will span six months of intensive hands-on training, followed by another six months of industrial attachment.
The beneficiaries will be equipped with skills in various trades, including fashion design, hairdressing, make-up, barbering, electrical installation, catering, welding, event management, decoration, building, tiling, interlocking, and plumbing, among others.
Speaking at the flag off earlier, the Chairman of SNYC, Delta State Chapter, Comrade Wiska Monday, said the initiative was conceived to give young people marketable skills that can sustain them in today’s competitive economy.
He added that beyond training, the programme aims to nurture entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
In recognition of his support for youth development, Mr. Agofure was also conferred with the title of Patron of the Southern Nigeria Youth Congress.
He commended the organisers for their foresight and pledged the ministry’s continuous support in initiatives geared towards empowering Delta youths.
