Residents of Achalla-Ibusa Road in Oshimili North Local Government Area have appealed to the Delta State Government to rehabilitate the drainage system along the road.
The call follows a recent accident involving a Toyota Camry and a tipper truck laden with sand.
An eyewitness, Mr John Anayo, described the incident as a “narrow escape,” noting that it was the second time a vehicle had plunged into the open drainage.
“We are appealing to the state government to come to our aid. This is the second vehicle that has fallen into this drainage. We were lucky no life was lost, but we do not want to wait until lives are claimed,” Anayo said.
He explained that the drainage was too wide and should be covered, adding that the accident occurred when the Camry driver, an elderly woman, tried to avoid a collision with the tipper.
According to him, a car was parked on the left side of the road, forcing the tipper driver to swerve towards the Camry. In the process, the Camry veered into the open drainage.
Residents insist that unless urgent action is taken to rehabilitate and cover the drainage, the risk of further accidents and possible fatalities remains high.
