DTSG, CDCs To Reduce Oil Theft In Delta

THE Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to work with the Community Development Committees (CDCs) of the Niger Delta Oil and Gas Producing Areas and all relevant stakeholders to reduce oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the state.

The Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Hon. Peter Uviejitobor disclosed this when he received a delegation of the CDC, led by its Chairman, Joseph Ambakederimo on a courtesy visit in his office in Asaba. Uviejitobor noted that advocacy through grassroots efforts and awareness of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) has been an eye-opener for host communities, helping them understand their benefits.

“We are an intermediary ministry that proffers solutions to oil and gas companies and host communities to ensure peaceful co-existence between the settlers and host communities to boost oil production”, he added.

Speaking earlier, the CDC Chairman, Joseph Ambakederimo appealed for collaboration and support of the state government for more, and continuous effort for advocacy through grassroots campaign and enlightenment in helping to curb pipeline vandalism and oil theft.

Ambakederimo said as a neutral body, the CDC promotes peaceful co-existence amongst oil companies and host communities to foster development in oil and gas producing communities in line with global best practices.

“We applaud Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his foresight and being forward-thinking in initiating people-oriented projects across  the length and breadth of the state since the creation of Delta State”, he added.

The CDC Chairman appealed for the government’s support and sponsorship of its efforts at achieving more in campaign against oil theft, dispute resolution among major stakeholders and provision of alternative economic spheres for communities in the state.
