Be Dedicated, Set Exemplary Conduct —PS Advises Delta Workers

BY SAM DUVWODE

IN a bid to enhance performance and efficiency within the state’s civil service, the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Delta Deputy Governor, Dr. Anthony Nwokolobia, has called on civil servants to remain dutiful, dedicated, and exemplary in their roles.

Speaking while addressing members of staff at the Government House, Asaba, Dr. Nwokolobia emphasized the importance of aligning individual and departmental efforts with the state government’s policy goals.

He highlighted the shift toward performance management as a core focus of the civil service.

“We are expected to develop strategic objectives and align them with the policy goals of the State Government,”

“At our level, whatever we do, individually, departmentally, or collectively, must contribute to the achievement of these goals.” Dr. Nwokolobia stated.

He noted that performance monitoring is now ongoing, moving beyond reliance on annual appraisals alone. He encouraged the staff to maintain visibility through physical presence, productivity, and proper documentation, while staying informed on procurement laws and embracing digitalization.

“Ignorance of the law is never an excuse,” he warned, urging employees to engage in constant reading, upskilling, and retooling.

Dr. Nwokolobia also stressed the need for knowledge sharing, mandating that officers returning from training programs cascade their learnings through internal workshops.

The Permanent Secretary underscored the value of positive attitudinal changes, starting with punctuality and discipline.  “As the Head of Service has repeatedly emphasized, staff must always be punctual to work. “When you arrive early, you are better positioned to settle down and perform your duties effectively.” He said.

Dr. Nwokolobia further cautioned against indiscipline, including spreading rumours, making unsubstantiated statements, particularly to the press or engaging in actions detrimental to the office’s objectives.

“Always authenticate every available information before speaking,” Dr. Nwokolobia advised.

He called for team spirit while recognizing hierarchical structures to foster orderly relationships. “We must continue to work together as brothers and sisters,” he stressed.

Dr. Nwokolobia revealed plans for engaging professional bodies and consultants for seminars and capacity-building, alongside introducing periodic job rotations for coaching and mentoring. He reiterated the avoidance of insubordination, disrespect, foul language, and unethical conduct, urging staff to remain “thoroughbred” at all times.

In supporting remarks, the Director of Administration, and the Director of Finance and Accounts,  Mr. Ebinum-Olisa Godspower and Mr. Onofekohwo Prosper Aruoture, respectively, advised staff on aligning their practices for more effective service delivery.
