THE Catholic community in Agbor, Delta State, has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of the Parish Priest of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Agbor, Rev. Fr. Steve Chukwuma, who reportedly slumped and died while preaching during the crossover Mass for the New Year.
According to a source close to the church, the tragic incident occurred just a few minutes after midnight, as the priest was delivering his homily to usher the congregation prayerfully into the year. Worshippers were said to have watched in shock as the cleric suddenly collapsed at the altar.
Efforts were immediately made to rush him to the Central Hospital, Agbor, where medical personnel battled to revive him. Sadly, he was confirmed dead shortly on arrival.
The unexpected death of Fr. Chukwuma has cast a dark cloud over the Catholic community and the entire Agbor kingdom, especially as it occurred at a time when parishioners had gathered in thanksgiving and hopeful anticipation of a new year.
Members of the church have described the late priest as a humble, devoted, and compassionate shepherd, who dedicated his life to the service of God and humanity. His passing, they said, leaves a painful void that will be difficult to fill.
As the news of his death continues to spread, sympathizers, fellow clergy, parishioners, and residents have continued to troop to the parish to register their condolences and pray for the repose of his soul.
While official details regarding the circumstances of his death are still emerging, the Catholic community in Agbor has called for prayers, calm, and unity during this period of grief.
Rev. Fr. Steve Chukwuma will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to the gospel, his pastoral warmth, and the countless lives he touched in his lifetime.
