Former Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, the Rt. Hon. Peter Onwusanya has explained that Asaba satisfies all the requirements to maintain its status as a state capital if the campaign for the proposed Anioma State is realised.
He spoke to reporters on the heels of the rumoured moves to site the capital of the proposed Anioma State in a city outside Asaba, the present capital of Delta State.
The Asagba-in-Council, at the end of its weekly meetings presided over by the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Asagba Prof Epiphany Azinge, SAN, kicked against the speculations making waves in social media of possible replacement of Asaba as the capital of the proposed Anioma State.
According to the former Speaker, Asaba has remained an attractive and peaceful capital city from the days of the Royal Niger Company and up till present day and will be better positioned as the capital of the proposed Anioma State.
He contended that those making clandestine moves, as exposed by the social media, to deny Asaba it’s place as the capital of Anioma State should retreat or face dire consequences.
While revealing that the agitation for Anioma State, with the capital outside Asaba was trending, Onwusanya called on leaders of the Anioma Nation to intervene and call the propagandists to order, insisting that those with negative inclinations to deny Asaba as the capital of Anioma State were selfish, clanish, and anti-progressives.
The former Speaker lauded the Asagba of Asaba, Prof Azinge, SAN for the role he had played towards the quest for the creation of the State, and enjoined all those in the vanguard of the campaign for the creation of Anioma State to tread with caution and insist on the status quo by maintaining Asaba as the capital.
He also praised the Asagba-in-Council, state lawmakers, and Chairmen of local governments in Delta North for taking position on the vexed move.
