BY EVELYN ZORZOR

The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen Oluremi Tinubu, has commissioned and handed over a state-of-the-art Digital Learning Centre at the Model Technical College, Asaba, to promote digital education and youth empowerment across the country.

Speaking virtually during the event, Sen Tinubu, who is the National Chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), described the project as part of a nationwide effort by the Initiative to equip Nigerians, particularly women and youths, with the digital skills required to thrive in the modern economy.

She disclosed that the commissioning and handover ceremonies were being held simultaneously across 10 states of the federation, including Delta, Edo, Lagos, Zamfara, Yobe, and Nasarawa, among others.

The First Lady said that the establishment of the Asaba Digital Learning Centre aligns with the Federal Government’s vision to bridge the digital divide and prepare the next generation for opportunities in a technology-driven world.

Sen Tinubu commended the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Office of the First Lady of Delta State for their partnership and dedication towards the successful execution of the project.

Delivering her remarks at the event, the First Lady of Delta State and State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, expressed deep appreciation to Sen Tinubu for her visionary leadership and commitment to youth empowerment through digital education.

Deaconess Oborevworri, represented by the wife of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Josephine Emu, said the Asaba Digital Learning Centre would serve as a hub for training students, teachers, and entrepreneurs in information and communication technology (ICT). She urged beneficiaries to make good use of the facility to enhance their knowledge and productivity, emphasising that digital literacy remains key to creating opportunities and reducing unemployment.

The First Lady also admonished that students should be fully allowed to take ownership of and make proper use of the centre as required.

In his welcome address, the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Abdullahi, said the project reflects NITDA’s commitment to driving Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda and ensuring inclusive access to ICT resources.

He explained that the Asaba centre is one of several being established nationwide to promote digital skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship among young Nigerians.

In her goodwill message, the Commissioner for Technical Education, Smart Ufoh, commended the Delta State Government for its continuous efforts to secure the future and well-being of young people in the state through forward-looking educational policies.

Following the virtual commissioning by Sen Tinubu, Deaconess Oborevworri performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony and led dignitaries on a guided tour of the new digital classrooms, ICT laboratories, and training suites.

The commissioning of the Asaba Digital Learning Centre represents another milestone in the Federal Government’s ongoing effort to promote digital education, innovation, and youth empowerment under the Renewed Hope Initiative.
