Delta Committed To Tackling Ozone Layer Depletion —Jamani

THE Delta State Government, yesterday, restated its commitment to creating awareness and driving action against the depletion of the ozone layer as part of efforts to preserve the environment for present and future generations.

The commitment was given by the Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ejiro Jamani, in a statement to commemorate the 2025 International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, also known as World Ozone Day.

Jamani stressed that this year’s theme, “From Science to Global Action”, highlighted the remarkable global transition from scientific discovery on ozone depletion to international cooperation and effective policy implementation under the Montreal Protocol signed in 1987.

He explained that the state government would continue sensitization programmes targeting relevant stakeholders, adding that, amongst other things, the advocacy would focus on embracing renewable energy that promotes energy efficiency, and embracing sustainable land use options.

Speaking further, he said, ‘’ We are committed to continually creating awareness on the need to conduct regular inspection and maintenance of air-conditioning and refrigeration appliances to minimize refrigerant leakage, use less global warming alternatives in production such as Ammonia, Co2, buy aerosol products that do not use HCFCs, CFCs and HFCs as propellants, purchase of recycled products wherever possible, and purchase environmentally friendly appliances’’.

According to the Commissioner, the Ministry would also embark on sensitization campaigns in schools and markets, as well as artisans dealing with ozone-depleting appliances, including refrigerator and air-conditioner repairers, car A/C installers, resource pickers, and foam and aerosol manufacturers.

He further revealed that the commemoration would culminate in the provision of complimentary servicing of air-conditioners and refrigerators in some Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in partnership with the National Association of Refrigerators & Air Condition Practitioners, Delta State Chapter.

‘’As we commemorate the 2025 World Ozone Day, I call on everyone in Delta State and the world at large to remind ourselves that ozone is crucial to life on earth; therefore, we must continue to protect the ozone layer and at the same time, take positive step in addressing the present climate challenges for the protection of life on earth and for our future generations’’, he said.
