Delta One Of Few States Compiling Up-To-Date GDP -NBS

Three-Day Training Workshop On SGDP Holds In Asaba

BY AWELE OGBOGU

The Department of Statistics, Delta State Ministry of Economic Planning, in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics, Abuja and the World Bank, has kickstarted a three-day training workshop on Gross Domestic Product (GDP), holding at Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat, Asaba, between September 10-12.

It was observed by a staff of the National Accounts Division, NBS, Abuja, Mr. Bartholomew Ngwee, that Delta is one of the few states in the country compiling up-to-date GDP in successive years, adding that the three-day capacity building for statisticians in the state is another opportunity for continuous improvement.

The State Director of Statistics, Nkechi Maduemezie encouraged the participants to ask questions and prepare themselves better for future responsibilities.

After registration and opening formalities, Day One of the State Based Training on State Gross Domestic Product began with a presentation by a facilitator, Mrs. Margaret Akinwunmi, who took the participants on the Overview of State GDP- What is SGDP/State Accounts?, Past/Present Status, Relevance: State GVA and GDP.

This was followed by a presentation by Ngwee, who drilled the participants on the SNA 2008 Compilation Manual. These included sub-themes around the Principles and Concepts of SGDP Accounts and Economic Territory.

The participants, among numerous points, were taught what falls under household, residency or economic interest, compensation and others in the GDP. “The main rule for State Accounts is that the data have to add up to the corresponding national account data”, he said.

The GDP was described as the monetary value of goods and services produced within the borders of the state over a period of time, usually yearly or quarterly, while State Accounts by industry is used to describe production processes in states, including the state description of production processes of economic entities settled in the state, with the inputs, outputs, GVA, GDP, compensation of employees and employment involved in production.

The training programme also discussed the uses and challenges of compiling the State GDP, which is more difficult than the national GDP.

The training programme continues today at the same venue and will end on Friday, September 12.
