DTSG Reaffirms Resolve To Combat HIV, Viral Hepatitis, Syphilis

By Sharon Ivovi

The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to strengthening the State’s healthcare systems toward combating the spread of HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and Syphilis, in line with the Global Health Sector Strategy 2022–2030.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojame, made the commitment during a one-day high-level infectious disease programme jointly organized by the Delta State Ministry of Health, the National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme (NASCP), and the Trinity Health Foundation (THF).

The event, themed “Synergizing Efforts to End Infectious Diseases: Strengthening Investment, Innovation, and Collaboration Against HIV, Viral Hepatitis, Syphilis, Tuberculosis, and Malaria,” was held at the Professor Chike Edozien Secretariat, Asaba.

The forum brought together key stakeholders from Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and health development partners from within and beyond the State.

The state Commissioner for Health represented, by the Executive Director, State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Paul Yinkore, described the gathering as timely, noting that the burden of HIV, Hepatitis B, and Syphilis remained a significant public health challenge, particularly among pregnant women and newborns.

“With strengthened health systems, early screening, effective treatment, and robust community engagement, we can break the cycle of transmission and ensure that no child is born with HIV, Hepatitis B, or Syphilis in Delta State,” Dr. Onojame stated.

“This aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which prioritizes the health and well-being of all Deltans” the commissioner added.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Philomena Okeowo, commended the organizers and partners for their dedication, stressing that the fight against viral diseases demands collective action.

She called for sustained advocacy, public sensitization, and multi-sectoral collaboration to curb the spread of infectious diseases in the State.
