The Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Asaba Area Command, Chief Eric Osharode has called on members of the committee and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to develop more strategic approaches to effectively combat crime in the society.
Chief Osharode made the call during the 41st anniversary celebration of the PCRC held at the A Division Headquarters, Area Command, Asaba. The event was graced by senior officials of the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State.
Speaking to The Pointer correspondent, Osharode reflected on the achievements and impact of the PCRC, in collaboration with security agencies in curbing criminal activities since its inception, emphasizing that these contributions warranted celebration.
“Due to the rise in criminal activities, the image of the Nigeria Police has suffered. However, the PCRC has taken up the responsibility of advocating for the positive image of the NPF to ensure seamless operations,” Osharode stated.
He added: “Our role is to support security agencies at the grassroots level, but I believe we haven’t done enough given the persistent crime in our communities. There is a need to develop new and formidable strategies to tackle these heinous acts.”
A highlight of the event was the visit by PCRC members to inmates in the station’s cell, where they offered words of encouragement and distributed drinks and other items as part of the anniversary celebration.
Speaking on the theme, “Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) and Community Policing: 1984 to 2025”, the former Chairman of ‘A’ Division PCRC, Asaba Area Command, Pastor Anene Okafor, emphasized the importance of a sustainable working relationship between the PCRC and the Nigeria Police Force.
He said: “The PCRC is now an integral part of the Nigeria Police. Over the years, we’ve had numerous meetings and trainings with the NPF to build synergy. We’ve also proposed the construction of a befitting town hall, not only for the PCRC but also for the Police.”
“The PCRC serves as a bridge between the community and the Nigeria Police. Community policing plays a vital role in maintaining peace and order. To carry out this mission effectively, a conducive work environment and necessary logistics such as mobility are crucial. The PCRC is indeed the child of the Nigeria Police and should be treated as such,” Okafor concluded.
In his remarks, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ‘A’ Division, CSP Emeka Iheanacho, commended PCRC members for their unwavering collaboration and support. He encouraged them to continue their commendable efforts, describing their contributions as indelible in the sands of time.
In a vote of thanks, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the PCRC Area Command, Charles Chibueze, applauded members of the committee and the NPF for their relentless dedication over the years. He expressed appreciation for their time, energy, and resources, and looked forward to an even stronger partnership going forward.
