40-Year-Old Man Arraigned For Assaulting Police Officers, Causing Grievous Harm

A 40-year-old man, Mr Edozie Kanayo, has been arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Asaba for allegedly assaulting a team of police officers and inflicting grievous harm on a civilian, in an incident that occurred on 25th June 2025 at Umuonaje Quarters, Asaba, within the Asaba Magisterial District.

Mr Kanayo is facing a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy to commit felony, assault on law enforcement officers, causing grievous harm, breach of public peace, and malicious property damage, contrary to various provisions of the Criminal Code Law, Cap C21, Vol. 1, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006.

In Count I, the defendant was charged with conspiring with others now at large to commit a felony, to wit: serious assault on police officers. The act is an offence punishable under Section 516(A) of the Criminal Code.

Count II alleged that Kanayo and his accomplices, while armed with bottles, unlawfully assaulted a team of policemen led by Inspector Victor Ojefia, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 356 of the same code.

In Count III, the prosecution stated that the defendant and others stabbed one Emmanuel Owugechi with a bottle, causing him grievous bodily harm. The act contravenes Section 335 of the Criminal Code. Count IV accused Kanayo and his alleged accomplices of conducting themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace and setting ablaze two motorcycles while wielding bottles and other dangerous weapons—an offence punishable under Section 249(e) of the Code. Lastly, in Count V, the defendant was charged with wilful and unlawful destruction of two motorcycles, valued at ₦2,000,000, belonging to Emmanuel Owugechi. The offence is punishable under Section 452 of the Criminal Code.
