AS a way of celebrating the 2025 World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Spouses Forum of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Asaba Branch during week organized a health talk and distributed pads worth millions of naira to the female students of Government Model School, Asaba.
Speaking to the students on the event tagged; Celebrating Menstruation Day with Pride and not Shame, the Leader of the group, Mrs. Nneka Osunde, and others present, taught the girls how to maintain proper hygiene while experiencing their period.
They explained that menstruation is a natural monthly flow of blood through the virginal of every young woman.
Mrs. Osunde therefore urged them not to be ashamed but be proud of it as a woman.
According to her “It is something to be proud of globally because it necessary for a woman” Menstruation is a pride of a woman, this is what makes us a woman. Every woman most experience this as a young girl growing up, hence the forum is using the day to emphasis on the need to be properly guided and embrace better hygiene to avoid infections.
She noted that in Nigeria and other African countries, most young girls shy away from talking about their menstrual cycle as they see it as a taboo to talk about it.
Menstruation comes with a lot of experiences which varies from one to another. Some girls might experience heavy flow while others light flow. It also comes with pains while some might come with stooling and vomiting as the case may be.
Mrs. Osunde urged the girls to avoid self-medication during this period and should see it as part of womanhood, saying that every girl child is a blessing and period is not something you should be ashamed of because it is part of womanhood.
The organisers however, advised the female students on the need for proper hygiene during menstrual flow.
You must use proper sanitary pad which varies from different brands, bath three times daily to avoid odour, maintain neatness, and dispose the pad properly, they advised.
Mrs. Osunde therefore urges the girls to avoid the use of tissue paper because it is very dangerous to the virginal, the tiny particles of the tissue might likely enter your virginal opening thereby causing infection or harm to the body.
It is therefore advised that instead of using tissue they should use cloth because it is safer in absence of pad.
There were questions and answers as some of the student poured out their minds on how they felt during their periods.
