The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, identified simply as Kevin, over the gruesome murder of his partner, a young woman named Excellent, who was the mother of his two sons.
Speaking at the Command Headquarters, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Edafe Bright, explained that the tragic incident, which occurred between June 26 and 27, had initially set social media abuzz with allegations that Kevin had murdered Excellent by striking her on the head with a hammer.
According to SP Bright, the suspect had fled after the crime but was eventually tracked down and apprehended.
During interrogation, Kevin admitted to knowing the deceased for six years and confirmed they had two children together, aged three and two.
Asked what led him to attack her, Kevin claimed she was involved in prostitution, commonly referred to as “hook-up.” He alleged that when she visited his residence, she brought a bag of clothes for changing.
Upon confronting her, he revealed that she had picked up a knife, prompting him to grab a hammer. “We struggled and I managed to collect the knife from her, but then I used the hammer to hit her,” he confessed.
The PPRO questioned why, after disarming Excellent, Kevin chose to continue the attack. “You overpowered her and took the knife, which means your life was no longer in danger. Moreover, there are no stab wounds on your body,” SP Bright pointed out during the interrogation.
Pressed on why he still used the hammer, Kevin said she had bitten him. He admitted to striking Excellent on the forehead three times, but insisted he did not know those blows would kill her.
The suspect continued: “When I realised she was dead, I thought to myself, let me die too. That was when I jumped from our storey building, hoping to die with her, but I survived.”
He also confessed to taking 200mg of Tramadol and smoking ‘loud’ (marijuana) shortly before the incident, which he said influenced his actions. The suspect also claimed he had not been using them for long and had stopped since his arrest.
When asked for a message to others who abuse drugs, he advised, “My advice to them is to say no to drugs.”
Kevin described himself as a hustler who does farm work alongside ‘street’ (internet fraud).
SP Edafe Bright described the killing as truly sad and said it was important to parade the suspect to assure the public that the matter is being taken seriously. He added that there are many people crying out for justice for Excellent and confirmed that the suspect will soon be charged in court for prosecution.
