The need for local government chairmen and relevant agencies and stakeholders to increase their support for teachers, especially in the area of welfare has been stressed.
Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Oshimili South Chapter, Comrade Joseph Chiedu Mokogwu, stated this in Asaba when he led the newly elected executives of NUT in Oshimili South to pay a courtesy visit to the chairman of the council, Hon. (Dr.) Obi Kelvin Ezenyili.
Mokogwu, who commended the chairman and councillors for their unwavering support and cooperation with teachers in the local government, said that the essence of the visit was to appreciate the chairman’s strategic leadership qualities and achievements.
He appealed to the chairman to put smiles on their faces this Christmas.
Mokogwu explained that in the history of the council, no chairman ever gave bags of rice to members of the union, adding that history would be made when the present council chairman approves their request.
The Oshimili South NUT chairman, however, assured the council chairman that his executives and entire teachers in the area would continue to support him.
Responding, Ezenyili thanked Comrade Mokogwu and his team for the visit, noting that NUT is a trusted, reliable and dependable body that has remained committed and supportive.
He promised to support the NUT executives with 10 bags of rice, stressing that their request came very late when proposals and purchases had been concluded.
On 2027, the council chairman said that he was still fulfilling his social contract with the people of Oshimili South.
