- Describes Kingdom as “Urhobo’s Dubai”
The President-General of the Ughelli Descendants Union (UDU), Chief Samuel Akpimige, has appealed for increased federal and state government presence in Ughelli Kingdom, describing the area as the “Urhobo’s Dubai.”
Speaking over the weekend, Chief Akpimige noted that Ughelli has gradually shed its negative reputation of the past and is reclaiming its position as a hub of culture and development in Urhobo land.
He urged stakeholders including clergy, politicians, activists, and community leaders to collaborate in reshaping the narrative of the Urhobo people. According to him, Ughelli, once stigmatized for drug abuse and cultism, is now charting a new course toward peace, growth, and progress.
Emphasizing the importance of education, the UDU leader appealed to the Delta State Government to consider extending the Delta State University to Ughelli.
He pointed out that the kingdom, comprising 23 communities, has abundant land resources that could conveniently host such an institution.
Chief Akpimige explained that siting a tertiary institution in Ughelli would not only create greater educational opportunities for youths but also stimulate economic and infrastructural development across the kingdom and neighboring communities. “Ughelli is one of the fastest-growing kingdoms in Delta State and deserves strategic government attention,” he said.
